Last month’s announcement of 250 more job cuts, out of 4650 staff at the ABC, highlighted the organisation’s problems keeping up standards demanded by its charter. Is the professional broadcaster in danger of getting turned into a bull-ring of amateurs and squabbling ideologues?

Official Australian state policy on its public broadcaster, ABC, since 2014, has been to throttle it through withdrawing its budget by stages, while abusing it through Liberal-linkaged commercial media – Newscorp newspapers, 2GB radio network and Sky News pay television. There is also a sub-plot that involves, while the ABC survives, pressing it to deliver positive messaging for the government of the day.
