Mining in Papua New Guinea has been both a source of controversy and wealth for the country; since the industry took off back in 1970. The mining sector in PNG has traditionally wielded substantial clout in terms of dodging its environmental obligations; as well as taking precedence over other industries due to the countries high dependency on mining for its short-term revenue. Such recent mining projects include Lihir Gold Mine (commissioned in 1997) and Misima Gold Mine; which have been in the spotlight due to its questionable method of waste disposal into nearby seas.
