Brisbane embraces emerging fashion talent at The Fleet Store

The Fleet Store

The Fleet Store

Since opening this month, The Fleet Store has been a success, selling out of one student designer’s collection in less than a week.

The Fleet Store is an innovative business development and support service for emerging designers.

Launched by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Creative Enterprise Australia (CEA), it is the first dedicated fashion shop to be opened by an Australian university.

The pop-up store features designs by CEA mentees such as award-winning designer, Geroge Wu, as well as Juli Grbac, Subfusco, Francis Leon, Pendragon, Jane Peacock and Tom Gunn.

It also showcases garments and accessories made by past and present QUT fashion students, allowing them the opportunity to break into the fashion industry without undertaking a huge financial risk.

Despite having only been open for less than a month, the store has surprised QUT staff and students with how successful it has been.

The store manager, Cassandra Taylor, graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Fashion) from QUT in 2009. She is astounded by the amount of interest The Fleet Store has already generated.

“It has been surprising how many people are loving the concept of The Fleet Store and buying the unique product made by the emerging designers. We have only been open for two weeks and have already sold out of a current student designer’s collection!”

Lucinda Kirk, a regular customer at The Fleet Store, describes the clothes as “very refreshing”.

“It is exciting to see the up and coming talent that we have right here in Brisbane and it is fantastic that The Fleet Store is giving these students an opportunity to get their designs out there and establish themselves in the fashion industry.”

Fashion lecturer Kay McMahon confirms the store is already experiencing strong sales.

“If you are interested in buying the work of our current students you’ll need to visit The Fleet Store very soon, as we’re expecting to sell out of that stock!”

Ms Taylor attributes the success of the store to the support it has received from QUT, CEA, Brisbane Marketing, the Wintergarden and the public.

“Everyone has been very supportive and because of that we have so far had great results!”

The Fleet Store is located on Level 2 of the Wintergarden and is open from Tuesday to Sunday.

As it is a pop-up store it will close on the October 30, 2010.
