Construction forces closure of QUT child care centres

Two child care centres are to close because of construction of the new science and technology precinct at the Gardens Point campus of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
Both child care centres on campus - QUT Gardens Point Child Care Centre and QUT Gardens Point Creche - have to shut down for the three-year construction period.
Director of the creche Heather Connors said that most people have taken the offer to transfer their children to QUT Kelvin Grove Child Care Centre.
But she said that this solution did not suit everybody.
“For people working at Gardens Point, taking their children to Kelvin Grove first and then coming back to Gardens Point can be problematic,” she said.
“Not all the bus drivers on the shuttle bus (route 391) between the campuses allow students and staff to take their children along.”
Ms Connors said although some students and staff have found child care places in the suburbs they live in, there were still people that were not sure of what to do.
There is also the question of what happens when the new precinct is finished in 2012.
At present Ms Connors does not know if both child care centres will be reopened, where they will be located or their new capacity.
Both child care centres will close on December 18.
