Every year the Ekka races draw over 20,000 young people through the gates, and every year a fair amount of them are thrown back out those gates by security. As a result many people have called for more stringent controls of the event and even for its banning. What is it that makes this mid-week race day such a controversial topic? Why is it such a vital date in the calendars of Brisbane’s youth? And most importantly, does it have a future?

Sparse crowds over the Ekka’s opening weekend confirmed fears that swine flu will affect overall gate numbers this year.
